What is sober living?

Inpatient drug treatment can be challenging and exhausting. And after treatment, it’s not always best for people in recovery to immediately return home. Sober living is home-like place for patients post-drug treatment to recover and regain life skills. Sober living houses are often the first place people go once they complete an inpatient drug or alcohol treatment program.

Think of sober living as a transitional space before one in recovery returns to his or her home. These types of living arrangements help people ease back into their previous routine. They’re also known as transitional or recovery houses.

Benefits of sober living

Sober living houses provide a safe and supportive environment for recovering addicts to stay until they’re ready to reenter their community.

  • drug-free environment
  • access to support
  • can practice life skills and relapse techniques
  • motivational environment
  • judgement-free space
  • social support, which has been proven to help people stay sober

What to expect at a sober living house

Sober living houses are often called communal living spaces, meaning residents share the home with other people in alcohol and drug treatment recovery. These homes are often separated by gender.

The environment is entirely drug-free and encourages residents to stay on track with their sobriety. As such, there are a number of rules and guidelines residents must follow in order to stay in the home.

Sober living is still part of the treatment process, so every resident must follow the rules and can be discharged from the home if they disrupt the environment. Some rules may include:

  • mandatory attendance of a 12-step program or therapy
  • completing house chores
  • attending house meetings
  • abstinence from alcohol and drugs
  • general respect and care for housemates
