Who needs an Intensive Outpatient Program?
An Intensive Outpatient Program, or IOP, is a step down from inpatient care. Usually after a resident completes an inpatient treatment program, they’ll begin an IOP. IOP is a type of outpatient treatment where a patient receives intensive addiction treatment at a facility during the day, but then returns to their place of residence once treatment is complete.
IOPs are often ideal for people needing close monitoring and treatment for a mental health condition. Treating both addiction and psychiatric disorders is called dual diagnosis.

Medication
If you have a co-existing condition, such as anxiety, panic attacks, or depression, a doctor may recommend you take medication during outpatient addiction treatment to help alleviate any symptoms that could interfere with your treatment for drug addiction.
Group outings and activities
It’s possible you’ll go on group trips or participate in activities with other patients seeking drug addiction treatment. You may go on a group hike, visit a scenic location, or do other activities as part of a group.
