It’s never easy dealing with individuals that are addicted to drugs or alcohol, but it’s also not a good idea to let them go on bad terms. While the latter is much preferred and commonly done by employers around the United States of America, why don’t we ask ourselves this question: what can we do to support our addicted employees?
Those experiencing drug addiction are already struggling and they don’t need any more hardships in life. While we know it can affect your business, it also doesn’t cost a thing to be a bit more supportive – after all, they need all the support they can get.
So if you’re an employer looking for ways to support your addicted employees, here are a few things you should know:
- If your employee is suspected of alcohol or substance abuse, then it’s important to ensure that your employee is safe. This step could include removing your employees from their workplace.
- Your employee can be dismissed or fired when they’re proven to be consuming illicit drugs or alcohol while they’re working. Although it’s best to understand that once an employee’s rehabilitation treatment has begun, firing them would be prohibited.
- As an employer, it’s best to understand that substance dependency is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This means that certain actions or sanctions toward this particular employee could be prohibited.
No matter what happens, each employer has the legal responsibility not to disclose any information to those who have no business knowing about it. Plus, it’s best to have a mature conversation with your employee regarding their situation.
Offer them help or support whenever you can, and ask them if they’re considering going through a rehabilitation facility. We have to know that most people are scared to ask for help because of shame or embarrassment, but we can always lend a hand.
