7 Qualities that Recommend a Patient for IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program)

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is intended for those who want to be treated for substance use disorder. It has no need for detoxification or close supervision from medical experts. Clients don’t need to stay in residential treatment centers. They can simply stay home and do their usual routines.

IOPs aim to improve the client’s relationship with his or her family and community. They provide support to the patient, handle possible relapses, and teach how to cope with the problem. Although there are other types of treatment programs, the client can simply enroll in an intensive outpatient program.

7 Qualities that Recommend a Patient for IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program)

This program may not be the best option for people with severe drug or alcohol addiction. However, it is available for those interested in this type of treatment. Different users have their own individualized treatment programs, so they are guided by professionals. What’s great about IOP is being less intense with the treatment as compared to others. Here, clients can still become sober and will know how to handle the issues caused by the addiction.

Drug and alcohol users can still be successful in their path to recovery at the intensive outpatient program. However, these are the criteria for a person to undergo this so-called program:

1. A controllable substance use disorder

With addiction, you experience many symptoms. As subjected to IOPs, it will provide treatment programs most suited to the client on an outpatient basis. As the program provides several sessions that last for hours each day, clients can join counseling programs, be informed on how to prevent relapse, and participate in a 12-step recovery group. The IOP is recommended for a client with a controllable substance use disorder.

2. Can’t be away from home, school, or work for treatment

An inpatient program will need the client to be admitted to a rehab center. There is full separation from his or her loved ones. There is also a long duration for healing and recovery. But when a patient enrolls in IOP, he or she only spends a few hours per day for the sessions. Although the program typically lasts for 6-12 months, he or she will just need time off for the session. This arrangement is convenient for those who need to work or study while the treatment is ongoing.

3. Has no need for detoxification services or any medical needs

Unlike a residential treatment center, there is no detoxification or close supervision from medical experts. It’s simply an outpatient treatment process for a client to go through. The intensive outpatient program will only require the client to spend a few hours per day in the facility, and that he or she can go home afterward. It’s the reason why the treatment program is only available for mild to moderate addiction. The sessions are not intense but will help the patient to recover from his or her addiction.

4. After completing intensive addiction treatment, and needs a step-down program before he or she goes home

IOPs may be necessary if one has completed an addiction treatment program from inpatient rehab. To ensure the client from relapse, the treatment program is important for support and guidance. It will provide care and education to the patient, so he does the expected daily responsibilities once he or she gets home.

5. Has had a relapse

Joining a residential treatment program can be expensive on the part of the client and his family. It will also be the lowest times of the client due to the separation. So, choosing outpatient care or IOPs may be helpful for the patient to recover. As the treatment program no longer includes detox and close supervision, the sessions will help patients to minimize or end his or her addiction.

6. Can commute to and from the facility consistently

As the treatment program is on an outpatient basis, the patient or client can use his or her own vehicle for transport to and from the facility. He or she doesn’t need to stay long, as he or she will spend some hours per day. What he or she simply needs is the willpower to stop the addiction and recover from the dependency.

7. A home that is peaceful and conducive for recovery

The great thing about IOP is having to go home to a peaceful environment after the session. If the patient only follows the recommendation of each session, he or she can find himself or herself fully recovered. There is no need to be homesick, as he or she comes home to his loved ones at the end of the day.
