What To Expect In Outpatient Treatment?

Outpatient drug treatment is a little different from inpatient treatment but that does not mean it’s not effective. An outpatient treatment cures the patient equally and the rates of successful recovery are as much as the inpatient treatment. The centers providing this treatment use similar techniques as inpatient treatment centers. It works the best for people suffering from lesser levels of addiction.

Some of the major differences between the treatments are about the level of structure and provision of services and supervision. As this mode of treatment is provided only during the day, the cost of it is relatively low. It becomes an affordable solution to many, however, it may not be suitable for all patients.

There’s also another option available for patients who have recently completed an inpatient program and aren’t yet ready to face the world. They can always go for a PHP or Partial Hospitalization Program. PHPs give treatment during the day and allows patients to rest in the evening in a comfortable setting. This can last from 30 to 90 days or even longer as per the need.

Dr. David Sackett defines evidence – based practice as:

“. . .the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of the individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.” (Sackett D, 1996) (1)

Some rehab centers also follow another therapy known as “Reality Therapy”. This includes a personalized treatment plan for every patient. Here, patients are imparted with the knowledge that not everything happening around them is in their control, therefore, it is important to differentiate between the same and act up on it.

Other Evidence Based Therapy Include:

  • Cognitive – behavioral therapy: helps patients identify, prevent and handle situations where they are likely to consume drugs
  • Multidimensional family therapy: designed for adolescents suffering from addiction. Aims at overall improvement of the family functioning
  • Motivational interviewing: motivates people to take the treatment
  • Motivational incentives: utilizes positive methods to encourage patients to stop consuming drugs

Outpatient treatment programs are effective and focused on treating addiction. These also allow the patients to reside at their homes after daily therapy sessions. It lets them continue with their normal life which helps them balance their life. It becomes a great way to cure addiction if it’s not too severe. Hence, never hesitate to go for an outpatient treatment program as it is just as effective as an inpatient treatment program. Call us now to learn more!
